Can Linux Save Money for Your
Business?
What is Linux?
Linux is a
unique computer operating system developed by Linus Torvalds and
distributed under the GPL (open license). That means that it is free! Using Linux has become a viable and affordable alternative to
purchasing operating systems from Microsoft, Apple, and Unix vendors.
What are the
advantages of Linux?
Although very
affordable, Linux can be a challenge for average computer users to
operate (mostly because of unfamiliarity) and is not yet recommended for
using on the desktop. Running on the server, however, Linux has been
very successful, in both very large enterprises and small businesses. In
fact, our own small company network is mostly Linux systems. The webpage
you are currently reading is being run on a Linux server. Some reasons
that Linux has been so successful:
-
Stability - Linux has proven to be more
stable than Microsoft and rarely needs rebooting or reinstallation.
-
Performance - Linux will often
outperform other operating systems when compared on similar platforms.
-
Less Demanding Hardware Requirements -
You can often run Linux servers on older computers that are too slow
to run Windows. For example, an old computer from the closet could be
perfect to use for installing a Linux firewall for protecting your
network from the internet.
-
More Secure - Linux has proven to be
immune to the viruses that plague Windows. It is practically unheard
of for a Linux system to catch a virus.
What are the disadvantages of Linux?
Although
Linux has some great advantages (and is free!) there are some reasons to
not use Linux. In the SMB (Small to Medium Business) sector, Linux is
best used for standalone solutions that do not demand a lot of
integration with other processes. For example, deploying a Linux E-Mail
server is a popular solution. You would probably not deploy a Linux mail
server, however, if your company had integrated solutions that plugged
into your mail server such as a phone system that that needed to be
compatible with your mail server for voicemail features you use.
As
with any other solution, a Cost-Benefit Analysis should always be
performed to calculate whether a solution is right for your
organization. Locke Systems can help you determine when and where Linux
would be a right fit and a financial benefit to your company. Below is a
list of popular Linux solutions that are simple and inexpensive to
deploy:
